Doctor Who Finale Reactions

I know I posted my initial reaction yesterday when everything was just blaAARGH JOHN HURT WHAT IS HAPPENING. But I wanted to let it ferment some more and post another reaction, and that reaction is….good. It is good. And just seeing other people’s reactions on my dash, I realize that not everyone feels that way because of Moffat and sexism and story arcs being rushed and half-assed. And I’m surprised in myself that those aspects did not ruin the finale for me. Here is what made it:

Matt Smith’s acting. Like, damn boy, you need an award for stealing all of my feels. That’s probably been the one shining gem in Series 7.5 for me. He slides so brilliantly from bouncing 12-year old to finicky old man to a crying ball of tragedy. That said, his finale performance did not disappoint me.
Classic Who Doctors. Now, I’ve heard some criticism about how the editing was cheesy and did not match the poor resolution of the older Doctors’ performances, and I have to say….seriously? We had to go through several DW series of absolute shit special effects. For me anyway, I’m not watching the show for the special effects (even though it’s been nice that they’ve upped the quality in the last few series). With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed that fan handout, even if it was just that sometimes: a fan handout.
Being a crying mess. It’s kind of hard for me to hate something if it makes me cry (I know, I guess that sounds kind of backwards). I cried when the Doctor was upset about going back to Trenzalore. I cried when he acknowledged River (even though YES I understand that the whole conference call thing didn’t make much sense and that River’s strength has been greatly eclipsed with her living and dying for the Doctor—but I digress). I immediately laughed when the Doctor realized how odd it must’ve looked to Vastra, Jenny, and Strax when he kissed hologram River (YES I UNDERSTAND THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE, BUT MY FEELS DO NOT LISTEN TO REASON OR LOGIC). Basically, the finale stimulated my feels sensor, and even though the feminism core of me was pointing out Moffat’s subtle sexism in the dialogue, I couldn’t help but let this episode effect me positively.
The ending. Now, this is probably what sold me on the finale. Because what the ending did for me was open up the possibility of the Time War and a secret regeneration of the Doctor that he tries to keep hidden. That’s what’s always intrigued me about the show: the Doctor’s darker past and potentially darker future. I LOVE storylines like that. And it gave me hope for the 50th, which lately, has been setting my teeth on edge because Moffat’s been disappointing me lately. But now I’m pumped for what’s in store for the future, and that’s the best I can ask for from Doctor Who.

Now, do I think the finale is the greatest thing ever? No. There were a lot of problematic things with it, both in character development and in the plot. I mean, how does the G.I. die when it goes into the Doctor’s timeline, but the Doctor manages to get in and out with no problem, when that should create a massive paradox that will tear apart time?

This whole half of the series was really rushed, and as much as I love Clara, I felt she was just along for the ride most of the time. I also had problems with the “Impossible Girl” thing, because it made her out to be a puzzle to be discovered, rather than a person that the Doctor genuinely wants to be around. But you know, I’ve always found problematic things with those aspects in every Doctor Who series. And yeah, Moffat’s writing is sexist, but so was RTD in some ways, although we give Moffat more criticism because he’s more vocal about his sexist attitudes towards women characters. The writing is not perfect, but damn, it can be entertaining. And the finale, no matter how rushed it was, was entertaining and left me wanting more Who.

If I was a famous author I would publish a book with ten different endings which all went to print with varying degrees of rarity, but not tell the fans about it so that I could watch their confusion as they disagree over how the story ended. Then when they figured it out I would ‘come clean’, telling them that I had released eleven alternate endings and watch them panic again as they all try to find the last ending.

This is perfect.

I have never felt so good about pictures of myself. Mike Wilson (the photographer) was a joy to work with, as was the whole Espionage Team. Their products are all handmade and hand packaged and I highly recommend each and every one of them. Especially this new lip gloss. It is beyond amazing,
